Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Plan your advent calendar layout: sketch 24 small compartments (about 3" x 3" each) arranged in a grid on the hardwood board.
2. Using a pencil and ruler, mark the outlines of each compartment door on the board.
3. Carefully carve out the door frames with carving gouges so that each door is slightly recessed, about 1/8" deep.
4. Cut out 24 small rectangular doors from a separate piece of hardwood, each fitting snugly into the carved recesses.
5. Sand all surfaces and edges smoothly with progressively finer sandpaper.
6. Attach the doors to the main board using small hinges or magnets for a seamless look. If using hinges, drill pilot holes carefully.
7. Attach miniature knobs or wooden beads to each door for easy opening.
8. Optionally, stain or paint the board and doors in festive colors. Allow to dry thoroughly.
9. Apply your chosen wood finish evenly over the entire calendar to protect the wood and enhance its appearance.
10. Let the finish cure as per manufacturer recommendations.
11. Add numbers to each door using wood-burning tools, paint, or stickers.
12. Mount your advent calendar securely on a wall or place it on a mantle as a centerpiece.
13. Fill each compartment with small gifts, treats, or holiday notes to enjoy throughout the season.
