Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Measure and mark the plywood for the base and sides of the seat box: base (51 5/8" x 17 1/4"), two sides (11 1/4" height x 17 1/4" deep), and front panel (51 5/8" wide x 11 1/4" height).
2. Cut the plywood pieces accurately using a circular saw or handsaw.
3. Sand all cut edges smooth.
4. Assemble the box by attaching the sides to the base using wood glue and 1 1/4" screws. Make sure edges are flush.
5. Attach the front panel to the sides and base in the same way.
6. Cut a seat lid from plywood to match the base dimensions (51 5/8" x 17 1/4").
7. Sand the lid edges smooth.
8. Attach the piano hinge to the back edge of the lid and then secure it to the back edge of the box, allowing the lid to open upwards.
9. Fill any screw holes and gaps with wood filler, then sand smooth once dry.
10. Prime and paint or stain and seal the entire unit to your desired finish.
11. Cut foam cushion to fit the top of the seat.
12. Wrap the foam with fabric and staple securely underneath to create a cushion.
13. Attach handles or knobs to the front of the lid to easily lift the seat.
14. Optional: add weatherstripping or felt pads to the lid edges for a soft close and to prevent rattling.
15. Place the finished window seat between your built-in bookshelves and enjoy your new cozy storage bench.
