Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Measure and cut the wood into the following pieces:
- Headboard: 6 inches wide x 5 inches tall
- Footboard: 6 inches wide x 3 inches tall
- Side rails: 10 inches long x 1.5 inches wide (2 pieces)
- Bed slats: 6 inches long x 1 inch wide (4-5 pieces)
- Base board (optional for mattress support): 6 x 10 inches
2. Sand all pieces thoroughly with 120 grit sandpaper, then finish with 220 grit for smoothness.
3. Attach the side rails to the headboard and footboard by applying wood glue on the contact surfaces. Clamp or hold in place.
4. Reinforce the joints by driving in 1-inch screws through the side rails into the headboard and footboard. Pre-drill holes to avoid splitting.
5. Glue and screw the bed slats evenly spaced across the frame between the side rails to support the mattress base.
6. If using, glue the base board onto the slats for added mattress support.
7. Fill any screw holes or gaps with wood filler. Let dry, then sand smooth.
8. Apply wood stain or paint as desired. Allow to dry completely.
9. Finish with a clear varnish or sealant for protection. Allow to dry.
10. Optionally, add a small fabric mattress or cushion for a complete look.
