Homemade Stormproof Matches

Homemade Stormproof Matches

Create your own stormproof matches that stay lit even in windy or damp conditions. This project uses simple household materials to make matches that can be handy for camping or emergency kits.

Intermediate 1 hour $5
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Carefully remove the match heads from regular wooden matches by gently scraping them off with a knife or sandpaper, leaving the wooden sticks intact.
2. Prepare a workspace covered with newspaper or parchment paper.
3. Melt the paraffin wax or candle wax in a small heat-safe container over low heat (double boiler method recommended).
4. Dip the wooden matchsticks into the melted wax, coating them completely. Use tweezers or tongs to hold the matches.
5. Let the excess wax drip off and place the coated matches on parchment paper to harden.
6. Once the wax has cooled and hardened, apply a thin layer of Vaseline or petroleum jelly over each matchstick using a small paintbrush. This layer adds extra moisture resistance.
7. Allow the Vaseline to set; your stormproof matches are now ready to use.
8. To ignite, scrape the match head area with a rough surface (such as a matchbox striker), then light as usual. The wax and Vaseline coating will help protect the flame from wind and moisture.
