1. Design and plan your cabinet dimensions: overall size no wider than 36 inches (3 feet) wide, 36 inches tall, and 15 inches deep to keep it toddler-friendly.
2. Cut plywood pieces:
- Two side panels: 36" tall x 15" deep
- Top and bottom panels: 36" wide x 15" deep
- Back panel: 36" wide x 36" tall (can be thinner plywood)
- Two shelves inside (optional): 34" wide x 13" deep
- Two doors: 17" wide x 30" tall each (split width of cabinet front minus gap)
- Drawer boxes: Cut pieces for 2-3 drawers, approximately 15" wide x 6" tall x 13" deep
- Drawer fronts: same width as drawer boxes, about 7" tall
3. Sand all cut pieces smooth, focusing on edges and surfaces.
4. Assemble the cabinet box by attaching the sides to the top and bottom with wood glue and screws. Use clamps to hold in place while drying.
5. Attach the back panel with screws and glue for stability.
6. Install the shelves inside at desired heights using screws or small wooden cleats.
7. Assemble drawer boxes by gluing and screwing sides to bottom and back. Attach drawer fronts.
8. Create wooden runners inside the cabinet to allow drawers to slide smoothly or install metal drawer slides.
9. Install hinges on each door and attach doors to the cabinet front. Ensure doors open and close smoothly with a 1/8 inch gap between doors and cabinet frame.
10. Attach handles to doors and drawers.
11. Fill any screw holes or gaps with wood filler, sand smooth once dry.
12. Apply non-toxic paint or finish to all surfaces, letting dry thoroughly between coats.
13. Inspect the cabinet for stability and safety; sand any sharp edges.
14. Optional: Add soft-close or magnetic catches for doors and drawers for added toddler safety.
15. Allow finish to cure fully before letting toddler play with the cabinet.
