Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Cut two rectangular pieces of cardboard about 30 cm tall and 10 cm wide; these will form the front and back body panels of the nutcracker.
2. Using air-dry clay, sculpt the head, torso details, and legs separately. Keep the pieces lightweight and hollow if possible by shaping thin layers.
3. Once the clay parts dry, paint them with your desired nutcracker colors and set aside to dry completely.
4. Attach the two cardboard panels together at the sides using glue, leaving the top and bottom open to insert the arm mechanism.
5. Prepare the arms by attaching air-dry clay shaped arms to wooden skewers or dowels. The skewers should be slightly longer than the arm length.
6. Insert the skewers horizontally through holes punched or cut on each side of the nutcracker body, about halfway down the torso height.
7. Fix small springs or elastic bands on both ends of the skewers inside the body to provide resistance and allow the arms to move back and forth.
8. Attach a small bell or battery-operated buzzer inside the torso, positioning it so that movement of one arm lightly taps or triggers it.
9. Connect the buzzer to the battery holder and secure it with double-sided tape. Ensure the buzzer switch is on.
10. Test the arm movement to ensure the bell rings or buzzer activates when the arms move.
11. Add final decorative touches with paint or glued-on accessories.
12. Allow all glue and paint to dry before displaying your nutcracker.
