Raised Kids Loft Bed Using MALM Desk and Chests - Idea 1

Raised Kids Loft Bed Using MALM Desk and Chests - Idea 1

This design uses the MALM desk as the main platform supported by two MALM chests placed at either end for stability. A plywood platform is secured on top to create a safe sleeping area. The pull-out panel remains functional as a slide-out desk surface or play area under the bed.

Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Place the two MALM chests parallel, about 1.5 meters apart, aligned with the desk width.
2. Position the MALM desk horizontally bridging the two chests, so the chests support the desk ends.
3. Secure the desk to each chest using L-brackets screwed through the desk frame into the chests for stability.
4. Cut the plywood platform to cover the desk top and extend slightly over the chests to create a full sleeping surface.
5. Attach the plywood platform on top using wood screws through the desk frame and into the plywood.
6. Sand all edges of the plywood to avoid splinters and optionally paint or varnish it.
7. Install safety rails on the sides of the platform using wood slats or metal rails screwed into the plywood or desk frame.
8. Add anti-slip rubber pads under the chests and desk feet to prevent movement.
9. Verify the pull-out panel of the desk can still be used by ensuring it clears the chests below.
10. Use the space under the platform (the pull-out panel area and chest interiors) as study or play zones.
