Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Design the box dimensions (e.g., 8" long x 5" wide x 4" high) and sketch the parts: bottom, two long sides, two short sides, and lid.
2. Cut the wood boards to size using a saw (hand saw or circular saw).
3. Sand all edges and surfaces smooth with 120 grit sandpaper, then finish with 220 grit.
4. Assemble the box sides: apply wood glue along edges, clamp pieces together to form the rectangular box frame.
5. Reinforce with 1-inch wood screws, pre-drilling pilot holes to prevent splitting.
6. Attach the bottom panel to the frame with glue and screws.
7. Sand any rough spots once the glue is dry.
8. Attach hinges to the back edge of the lid and box body.
9. Install the latch or magnetic catch on the front to secure the lid.
10. Personalize the lid using a wood burning tool or paint pens with the birthday person's name or a special message.
11. Apply a wood stain or finish evenly, let dry according to instructions.
12. Seal the box with a clear acrylic spray or varnish for protection.
13. Let the box cure fully before use (usually 24 hours).
14. Optionally, line the inside with felt or fabric using glue for a refined look.
